Our family just spent a week in a Luxury Beach front Condo, it was a pleasure to watch children of all ages having fun in the crystal clear water on Sandy Beach. The weather was perfect, in the 80's with the sea breeze blowing, while it was around 109 in Phoenix.

As I sat under the Palapa, watching the tide roll in their were lots of happy beach lovers everywhere. I was very happy to see so many people on the beach, seems we are all a little tired of the mass media scare that keeps so many of you away from Rock Point.

Some of us know and understand it is just that media hype, so take a look at what USA Today quotes, “The analysis found that rates of violent crime along the U.S.-Mexico border have been falling for years" — For this story, USA TODAY studied crime trends along the U.S.-Mexico border, using data reported to the FBI from city and county police agencies in the four border states — California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

It found that violent crime rates were on average lower in cities within 30, 50 and 100 miles of the border — the distances used to fit various definitions of the "border region." Statisticians interviewed by USA TODAY confirmed the results.

And if that is not enough for you take a look at at what I saw on Sandy Beach while watching the tide roll in! Then pack up the car and head for the beach! The weather is awesome, the sky is always blue, and the water is just amaizing!

The public's realization that Rocky Point is still a safe and fun place to visit, it bring lots of you back to the Beach. Rumors (good ones) are floating around that we are done listening to the bad and false media hype and there is an excitement in the air so come to Rocky Point.

The Mexican govenment and the private sector are making important strides to ensure Puerto Penasco's success as both a national and international destination. Puerto Penasco is a very strategic point for the entire region of the Sea of Cortez in the area of tourism. It already has the necessary connectivity in order to continue it's tourism growth, with the Sea of Cortez Airport, the new coastal highway and proximity to the largest global market, the United States. Everything is coming together, and Puerto Penasco is sure to be one of Mexico's star tourist destinations

*The renovations of the Old Port are coming along beautifully, giving Old Port a whole new look. They have added new street lights, new sidewalks, landscaping and the businesses have all been given a new front façade. The benefits off all this hard work will be evident as all telephone, electrical and fiber optics will all be underground throughout this section of town

*The new mall in town near Old Port is expected to be complete later this year, and will include 6 movie theaters, restaurants and upscale shopping

*The Sea of Cortez International airport is serving like a launching pad and bringing in tourism from near and far. Fernando Antillon, Director of the Sea of Cortez Airport, has mentioned future plans for growth. Airlines are exploring the possibility of beginning flights to the area from the cities of Los Angeles, and Phoenix. They would first start off with charters, that will eventually lead to commercial flights. It is a fair estimation that within a two to three year period we could be recieving visitors flying from the United States on commercial flights, along with all the benefits this will bring.

The Sea of Cortez International Airport aerial tourism to Puerto Penasco continues to grow, proof of which is reflected in additional charter flights to the area from spots including Queretario, and Tijuana, Baja California. On October 29th both flights made their first arrival in Puerto Penasco. These are to continue throughout the year with arrrivals at least twice per week. The central Mexican city of Queretaro represents a strong potential market, with 21 million residents

*Holland American and Carnival Cruise Lines have future plans to add Rocky Point as a port destination bringing in visitors from all over the world

*Donald Trump Jr., son of real estate magnate Don Trump recently visited Rocky Point in December. He was here scoping out the Rocky Point area for sites for future projects (yes, projects, plural). He express a great interest in investing in Rocky Point.

*A huge new store, which is prominent throughout Mexico, named Bodega Aurrera , is projected to be completed by September 2011 . This company is owned by Walmart, and will be a major convenience for both tourists and the locals of Rocky Point ....and you know what comes after Walmart right....Sam's Club is sure to follow

*Another new addition, and one that is very important for the tourism sector, Federal Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara Manzo recently visited the area and gave a press conference in regards to the construction of a convention center that is sure to boost this area even more. Puerto Penasco is truly grateful to be chosen, given that the more we have to offer to different types of tourism in the region, the more visitors we will have throughout the year.

The Penasco Convention Center will include a convention hall with a capacity for up to 3,000 people, a conference room, museum, a game room, lobby with exhibition hall and an open air auditorium with seating capacity for up to 1,200 people. The site is planned for the old airport area, just as you come into town.

Is Rocky Point Safe?

It is critical to understand that Mexico violence is over 95% confined to the three transshipping cities of Tijuana, Juarez and Nogales. The Mexico government is so serious about fighing this that they have committed over 30,000 soldiers to these border towns. It is equally important to understand that Rocky Point is literally hundreds, and even thousands miles away from these problemed areas.

Rocky Point remains a very safe tourist destination, that has been affected by the misleading media scares.

According to the US State Department, 50,000 Americans visit Mexico each day. Statistics show that Mexico is the second safest country in the world for US citizens to visit. This means Mexico is safer than Italy, Frances, Germany, Spain and UK for American tourists

FBI statistics show that no city in Mexico has as high of violent crime rate as New Orleans, Chicago or Las Vegas. The Mexico City with the highest crime rate is Tijuana, which has the same crime rate equivalent to Philadelphia, PA.

Is there corruption in Mexico - Yes.

Is there equal amount of corruption related to the drug business in the United States - Yes

The drug business is a 300 billion dollar a year industry. Let's look at the reality of the massive drug and corruption problem. U.S Secretary Hillary Clinton was clear in her honest assestment of the problem. "Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade"

Fox News continues to scare people with its focus on kidnappings and beheadings. Yes, there has been this type of crime in Mexico, the concentration of kidnappings has been in Mexico City, and the three aforementioned cities of Nogales, Juarez and Nogales among the very wealthy or cartel related. With the exception on Mexico City, the number one city for kidnappings among NAFTA countries is Phoenix Arizona, with over 359 kidnappings in 2008.

These same new sources have misled the public as to the real danger of the swine flu in Mexico and temporarily devastated the tourism industry throughout the whole country of Mexico, even though there were more reports of swine flu cases in the United States than in Mexico.

It is my personal assessment that the crime in the United States across the board is very random. Victims of all ages are affected. The US News report daily a wide variety of crime reported from all ages, young and old. Everyone from small children being abducted and raped to home invasions are widespread, the crime in Mexico is more targeted to the drug cartel business, and no tourist have been involved. Therefore, if you are not in the drug cartel business, then you can consider yourself very safe in Mexico

Mexico: Some facts not in the news
If Facts Don't Lie, is Mexico Safer than the U.S.?

Our government and the U.S. media have convinced most Americans that Mexico is not a safe place to visit as drug traffickers are fighting it out to see which gang will have the right to sell their illicit drugs to the very group that will not be visiting Mexico. They will have to wait until they return from Easter break to get their Mexican smuggled drugs at home.

But what really struck me was that the preferred country to visit this Easter break in lieu of Mexico is the Dominican Republic. It struck me because the Dominican Republic is rated as the number one country with the highest propensity for crime in the world. According to facts gathered by NationalMaster.com, their total crime per 1,000 residents (per capita) is 113.822 -Compared to the U.S. that is 8th in the world in total crimes at 80.0645 per 1000 residents, making chances of being a victim of a crime in the Dominican republic better than 10%, and slightly less than an 8% chance of being a victim in the U.S.

But here is the real clunker - Mexico, the country our government tells us not to visit and the media has a field day reporting any crime be it significant or not to further put the fear of God into staying away from there - well, it ranks 39th in total crime in the world with a per capita of slightly less than 13 crimes per 1000 residents that is a 1.3% chance of being a victim of crime in Mexico.

So Mexico is out, Dominican Republic is in, yet the chances of being a crime victim there is greater than in the U.S. and the chances of being a crime victim in the U.S. is greater than in Mexico. But, for our own safety we need to stay out of Mexico.

Have you ever felt like you're being duped but you can't quite put your finger on why - what's the motive? Is it to keep us from facing some bitter truths? We keep reading how crime is down, how safe we are compared to most other parts of the world. But is it true?

So here are some multiple choice questions for you:

In one of the only bright spots due to its recent gang related murders, Mexico, on a per capita, ranks as more dangerous than the U.S. occupying No. 24 and Mexico No. 6 in the world, but in total number of murders the U.S. is No. 5 and Mexico No. 6.

In fact, much of the crime data per capita 1000 population suggests that in many respects Mexico is safer than the U.S.: in assaults the U.S. ranks No. 6, Mexico No. 20; burglaries the U.S. No. 17, Mexico No. 34; car thefts U.S. No. 9, Mexico No. 22; fraud U.S. No. 18, Mexico No. 29; Rape (Canada No.5), U.S. No. 9, Mexico No. 17.

No doubt that at the expense of Mexico we are being duped. Is it to hide our insatiable appetite for illicit drugs and cheap labor, and so by pointing the finger of guilt to the biggest supplier of both we exculpate our actions or at minimum pacify our own guilt?

Maybe it's time for "the home of the free, and land of the brave" to take note.

We just got back from another awesome trip actually quick getaway, sittin on sandy beach watching the dolphins play all day long! The town is quiet, peaceful, the water is crystal clear, the sky is blue. Talk about forgetting the world and gettin intouch with nature!

If you have not been here in a while, you do not know what your missing!

Watching the fishing boats come in and out of the harbor, pelican fishing, seagulls passing by, what is missing? You!

Walmart is being built! It really is, should bring some jobs to the city. Did you hear Donald Trump Jr. gave a vist to the sleepy little place! Looking at some projects!

Just in case your wondering about how things are in Rocky Point, I thought I would share this story with you from the AZ Daily Star!

There's been so much negative press lately about the violence in Mexico that I wanted to share the experience that my 13-year-old daughter and I had over Thanksgiving weekend.

We have a tradition of going to Rocky Point and camping on the beach with friends. This year, I was a little nervous because of everything I'd heard, but decided that as long as we traveled during daylight hours, and on a day when a lot of Americans would also be making the trip, it would be OK.

So we headed out, only to have a blowout midway between Sells and Why. That delayed us a couple of hours, but AAA finally arrived and got us back on our way.

So we continued on, crossed the border and headed into Mexico. I know I should have stopped at Sonoyta and picked up a spare, but the car seemed to be driving all right. I figured I'd get it all taken care of once we got to Rocky Point.

The only problem was - we didn't make it.

About halfway there, the former spare went bad. I pulled over; clearly we were in serious trouble now. This was a forlorn and desolate stretch of highway, and I no longer had a spare.

There wasn't time to think about it for long, though, because within about two minutes, a car pulled up behind us. Inside were four kind of rough looking 20-something Mexican men.

For a moment, I wondered if "bad" was about to get a whole lot worse. But no, they got out of the car and started checking to see if their spare might fit.

When that wasn't an option, they asked if I could drive my vehicle the way it was. I was skeptical. The tire was still holding air, but the tread was peeling off like an orange. But what other option was there?

They said they would follow us - and they did. So we limped the last 30 miles into Rocky Point on the shoulder of the road with our good Samaritans following behind with their hazard lights on.

Once we arrived, they got us to a tire shop and made sure everything was under control. Although they never asked for anything, I gladly tipped them for their assistance. They took off, only to stop back by a little later to see if we needed anything else.

It's worth mentioning that in all the time we waited on the side of the road for AAA on the U.S. side, the only person who stopped was a friend who happened to be on his way back, saw us, and turned around to see if he could help.

So much for all the dangerous violence in Mexico. I'm not saying it doesn't exist - in some places, it does. But Mexico is a big country, and Rocky Point is not Ciudad Juarez.

Unfortunately, though, the damage has been done in the minds of most Americans.

The campground (usually filled to capacity over the holiday) was at about a third. The hotel next door had - maybe - 10 cars in the parking lot.

If you are a former Rocky Point aficionado who has been scared away of late, you should know that your friends there are suffering - that waiter who was always so friendly, the girls who braid hair on the beach, and those guys who hawk the shrimp.

When the tourists they depend on don't come, their already-difficult lives become desperate.

And yet, four young men didn't think twice when they saw a stranded woman and her daughter. They stopped to see how they could help.

It would be nice if we could return the favor.

Paradise really is just 3.5 hours from Phoenix, it is a wonderful place to connect with nature and your family and friends.

I am always happy when I am by the sea of Cortez in Rocky Point / Puerto Penasco, and so are all of the people I come into contact with.

I have been going to Puerto Penasco for about 15 years now, and I have never had a bad experience, ever, the people are always happy and friendly, here are some comments from other travelers!! Enjoy the Beach, in Rocky Point with awe-inspiring sunsets over crystal clear waters, and perfect beaches are sure to make your visit more than worth while.

You will have fun with your family at Rocky Point in Mexico as there are various activities to do and different water-sports to enjoy. Surfing, swimming, scuba aquatics, banana boat journeys, fishing, sea kayaking, evening cruising are some of the activities you may like to enjoy.

The Sea of Cortez can give you an an exiting opportunity to watch sea animals like sea lions, pelicans, whales, porpoise and other sea creatures that may create a sense of wonder seeing them. My family and I just returned after a week in Rocky Point. In 35 years of going there, I have noticed an appreciable effort by the residents to welcome all American visitors. Even if you are from Arizona. Restaurants, shops and vendors are bending over backward to be kind, friendly and welcoming. When I hear of the violence in Rocky Point, all I have to do is read one page of The Republic about the stabbings or shootings that happened overnight in Phoenix. There is no comparison - Phoenix is more dangerous.

Some of my happiest memories are of trips to Rocky Point with my family. Years ago, when my six children were small, my husband and I made trips to Rocky Point with all aboard a secondhand Volkswagen bus. We slept on the beach and had a fabulous time.

When the kids were grown, my husband and I went down alone, stayed in a friend's house and had a wonderful time cruising the malecón, the little stalls and the wonderful restaurants.

Now I am 86 and still going to Rocky Point but relying on my children's accommodations, a small cottage in Las Rosas and a condo at Luna Blanca. The citizens of Rocky Point are always friendly, courteous and willing to help an old lady walking the malecón and conversing in her gringa Spanish.

I love Rocky Point and will continue to visit any chance I get. Here in Tucson, we treasure its beaches, its ambience and its people. To our southern neighbors, we are with you all the way!

Of course I'll go to Rocky Point. It makes me mad every time something like this makes it into the press.
We go to Rocky Point a few times each year and can't wait to go back. You media blow the whole "danger" thing out of proportion and are causing undue suffering for the folks down there that rely on tourist dollars. Geez, last year it was "Swine flu - will you go to Rocky Point?"
Thousands of Arizonans have places in Rocky Point and go down regularly. If you have any doubt, just check out the line of cars trying to get back into the United States on Sunday afternoon.

Stop with the danger, danger, danger BS, and try a story like: "In spite of bad, inaccurate press, Rocky Point still a great place to go." Between the economy, swine-flu scare, cartel press and the need for passports, Rocky Point is hurting.

There are no guarantees in life. What do you think the crime rate or murder rate is in Washington, D.C., Compton, Calif., or Richmond, Va.? How about a story with the headline, "Warning for vacationers going to Disneyland this summer" because of the high crime rate in Los Angeles?

Sure, I'll be going to Rocky Point, but not until September or October. It'll be nasty-hot and humid until then.

For the past seven years, me and my family have been traveling to Puerto Penasco. Since then, we have done just about everything there is to do there (kayaking, banana boat, fishing, ATV riding), traveling at least once a year. We are a young family with two young kids and another onthe way.

At first we shared the common fears of U.S.-born travelers in Mexico. However, each year we feel more and more comfortable, even with young ones having common accidents that required health care. We just feel that if you take the crime rate per capita compared to cities in the U.S., you would find that it is very safe, if not better than most communities in AZ.

As I write this, I am sitting in the Sonoran Spa with my laptop, using the free wireless, as my kids dry off from a night swim in the pool. In short, I would say I feel very comfortable traveling to Puerto Peñasco.I think the biggest issue with those who don't want to travel here is their lack of knowledge of the culture, the law and how to be a respectful traveler; using common sense in a new city. They feel lost in a city where signs are in Spanish, and feel uncomfortable by sensationalized stories that hit local media stateside. I guess you can't blame them in some respects (being overly cautious), but hasty generalization by many may keep this beach city a cheap destination for me and my family, so maybe it is a win-win.

I was in Rocky Point in May and am planning on going again. I have been traveling to Rocky Point for over 20 years and have not had problems. I am saddened by the recent shooting of the police chief and his associate. There are, unfortunately, shootings in every city. Phoenix definitely has its share, and this incident will not prevent me from traveling to one of my favorite close beach vacation spots.

Commercial flights have been inaugurated to Puerto Penasco-- FINALLY! Late last month the new Mar de Cortes International Airport welcomed its first ever commercial flight, courtesy of Aereo Calafia. A lone sunbather shimmers in the distant expanse of white sand.

Pelicans glide over the sparkling Gulf of California, lifting and diving in a light breeze. Only two other people are visible along the shore, a couple holding hands as waves lap against their ankles.
No cartel assassins are shooting it out.

No machine-gun-toting federales stand guard.

The sunbather, Beth Smith of Payson, awakens with a start. "Oh, no," she says, touching her sunburned face. "It's just so peaceful here, I fell asleep. And now, I'm going to be fried."

Such is the plight of tourism in Puerto Peñasco, a Mexican town better known in Arizona as Rocky Point and long regarded as Arizona's beachfront.

Amid an economic recession and drug wars in Sonora, U.S. visitors, once the town's economic lifeblood, are staying away in record numbers. Since 2008, when 2.4 million people swarmed here, the Rocky Point tourism office reports a 50 percent drop in visitors.

Americans who live and work here seem bewildered by the loss of allure for a town that remains a gem by the sea. more.............

Happy New Year!! Can you believe the first month of 2010 is just about gone!

The Holiday week in Penasco was perfect, the weather was awesome!

We had nice bright sunny days with temps in the low 70's. The winds were so light that it became quite warm while sitting in the sun. Just a wonderful way to spend the holidays with family and friends.

The Penasco Childrens Foundation had a successful New Years Eve event at the Sonoran Sun Resort and raised about 1800.00 for the children in one night! The Food at the resturant was wonderful, and the event was enjoyed by all.

Changos on Sandy Beach had a live band and was Rockin all night long, full of happy beach guests to bring in the new year, they were open until 4 am. Standing room only, Talk about a Happy New Years Party! You have got to plan on it for next year.

Puerto Penasco had a severe storm January 21, with winds reaching 65 mph and heavy rain. We received a call from city hall requesting donations of blankets for the people in need.

The Blankets do not have to be new, so, if any of you have some extra blankets not in use please bring them down to Rocky Point next time you come, so we can donate them to city hall.

While we are on the subject of City Hall, the new Government in Puerto Penasco now has Citizens and Residents Wednesdays!

This is your opportunity to speak to the Mayor, Chief of Police, Fire Dept, finance dept, zoning dept, etc about your concerns or thoughts of improvement in our city. Don't worry if you don't speak Spanish. There will be many bilingual people to assist you. The hours are from 10 to 2ish. It is located on the city hall patio. It will be held every Wednesday. Puerto Penasco's Schools and the city’s sports program are to help promote civic good will for the school children and guests to Puerto Penasco, the sports programs are to direct the children’s energies to sports activities. Form bonds between the school children, parents and the parties adopting the school.

By adopting a school in Puerto Penasco, we can provide Basketballs, Baseball, soccer balls and volleyballs for the school sports teams. They need balls for both girl’s and boy’s teams in each sport. We can go to watch the children's games at the adopted school, meet the children, families and support them.

The new Mayor is reaching out in good will by hiring only bilingual individuals to work in the city government out of consideration for our comfort and support.

Mexico's health care lures Americans

Thousands of American retirees in Mexico have quietly found a solution of their own, signing up for the health care plan run by the Mexican Social Security Institute.

"It was one of the primary reasons I moved here," said Judy Harvey of Prescott Valley, who now lives in Alamos, Sonora. "I couldn't afford health care in the United States. … To me, this is the best system that there is."

It's unclear how many Americans use IMSS, but with between 40,000 and 80,000 U.S. retirees living in Mexico, the number probably runs "well into the thousands," said David Warner, a public policy professor at the University of Texas.

"They take very good care of us," said Jessica Moyal, 59, of Hollywood, Fla., who now lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, a popular retirement enclave for Americans.

The IMSS plan is primarily designed to support Mexican taxpayers who have been paying into the system for decades, and officials say they don't want to be overrun by bargain-hunting foreigners.

Program prompts relocation

The program has helped people such as Ron and Jemmy Miller of Shawano, Wis. They decided to retire early, but knew affording health care was going to be a problem.

Ron was a self-employed contractor, and Jemmy was a loan officer at a bank. At ages 61 and 52, respectively, they were too young to qualify for Medicare, but too old to risk not having health insurance.

"We knew that we couldn't retire without Medicare," Jemmy Miller said. "We're pretty much in Mexico now because we can't afford health care in the States."

The couple learned about IMSS from Mexico guidebooks and the Internet. They moved to the central city of Irapuato in 2006, got residency visas as foreign retirees, and then enrolled in IMSS.

The IMSS system is similar to an HMO in the United States, Jemmy Miller said. Patients are assigned a primary care physician and given a passport-size ID booklet that includes records of appointments. The doctor can refer patients to specialists, a bigger hospital or one of the IMSS specialty hospitals in cities such as Guadalajara or Mexico City.

In 2007, Ron Miller got appendicitis and had emergency surgery at the local IMSS hospital. He was in the hospital for about a week and had a double room to himself. The food was good, the nurses were attentive, and doctors stopped by three or four times a day to check on him, he said. At the end of it all, there was no bill, just an entry in the ID booklet.

The Millers may soon move back to the United States, but Jemmy Miller said they want to try to maintain the IMSS coverage. "If something big really comes up, we'd probably come back to Mexico," she said.

Different levels of care offered

IMSS is one of several public health systems in Mexico, each with its own network of hospitals and clinics. The program, which was founded in 1943, is funded by a combination of payroll deductions, employer contributions and government funds. It covers 50.8 million workers.

IMSS facilities are a step up from the state hospitals, but not as advanced as Mexico's private hospitals, which are often world-class, said Curtis Page, a Tempe, Ariz., doctor and co-author of a book about health care in Mexico.

Most patients seem grateful nonetheless. When Michael Kirkpatrick, 63, of Austin, fell off his motorcycle near his home in San Miguel de Allende, IMSS surgeons gave him a stainless-steel artificial hip.

There was no physical rehabilitation after the surgery, just a checkup a few weeks later.

"There was not the kind of follow-through and therapy that you would expect if you were doing this in the first world," Kirkpatrick said. "But it was satisfactory. The hip feels good."

Bob Story, 75, of St. Louis, had prostate-reduction surgery at an IMSS hospital in Mazatlán and discovered that patients were expected to bring their own pillows. It was a small price to pay, he said, for a surgery that would have cost thousands of dollars back home.

"I would say it's better than any health plan I've had in the States," he said.

Just out today! "Arizona's Beach" will now be only a short flight away.

A new international airport in Puerto Peñasco — also known as Rocky Point — is to open next week. Initially, there will be service for private and executive flights, and the hope is to have commercial flights to and from Tucson, Phoenix and Hermosillo beginning in January.

The Mar de Cortes International Airport was built by Operadora Aeroportuaria Golfo de Cortes. S.E. de C.V. with an initial investment of $45 million, said Fernando Antillón, airport director.

"This is a terminal that is going to keep growing … according to the demand," said Antillón.

The airport is 20 miles south of Puerto Peñasco and about 60 miles from the U.S. border. Puerto Peñasco is 35 minutes by air from Phoenix and one hour from Los Angeles.

The terminal will be inaugurated next Thursday by Mexico's president, Felipe Calderón, as well as representatives from the tourism industry.

It will be fully operational by 2012, but currently its 1.55-mile concrete runway is capable of handling all types of service and aircraft up to Boeing 757s and similar aircraft, according to airport officials.

Antillón said the next phase of the construction will bring the total investment in the project to nearly $80 million.

The airport is operated by a subsidiary of conglomerate Grupo Vidanta, which is currently building several resort and residential developments in the region. Grupo Vidanta built and operates the Mayan Palace in Rocky Point.

Airport construction started in 2007. At that time, Grupo Vidanta built in six months a provisional airport to accommodate a Mexico-U.S. border governors conference in Puerto Peñasco.

You know I love the Beach, grew up at the beach, I came across this article in the Travel Examiner written by Anita Kaltenbaugh, and I just had to share, I have to tell you that I could not have said it better myself.

Who doesn't love an ocean? Nature created this vast entity bigger than all of us, teeming with life and energy to enrich our lives. Something happens to me when I gaze at the water, something wonderful. The closeness of the sea fills my soul with calmness, liberating any stress I may be holding tight inside and energizing my spirit.
Just returning from two weekends in Southern California brought me to the realization that I love all oceans. Waves breaking, blue straight horizons as far as the eye can see and soft sand for walking on and lounging on, relaxing as if the work world stopped and there is not a care in the world as you sit by the water's edge.
Yes, I love all oceans, but after two weekends in Southern California I have a strong urge, deep passion bubbling up inside me to go back to my favorite body of water the Sea of Cortez in Mexico.
Now, many friends and relatives of mine live in Southern Cal so this it not a slam on their beautiful piece of the world. However, this is about urges and withdraws for something you love that rests inside your heart and nothing else can fulfill that place to create an inner feeling of peace and freedom.

Here are 7 reasons why I love the Mexican coastlines more (especially a charming little sea town called Puerto Penasco) over the California beaches.

1. Color of the water- turquoise, blue clear and clean. Warm describes the Sea of Cortez, here 9 months of the year no wet suits. I prefer my water warm, turquoise and full of glittering diamonds.

2. Can we say California traffic?- my experience in the last two weekends, no parking, drive around look for a spot to park, to go just 5 miles in a taxi- $20 cab ride, 20 minute ride in traffic to get anywhere, all day, every day. Sirens? Stayed in a hotel in La Jolla and counted 15 sirens in one night. No offense I like to park next to the beach and carry all the fun beach items 50 feet.

3. Prices- food prices, hotel prices, drink prices. Mexico even with a slower economy is less than half of the prices in Laguna Beach, La Jolla even Pacific Beach. I have credit card receipts to prove the cost difference. In Puerto Penasco you can stay in new condos for less than $100 a night. Does not exist in La Jolla, Laguna or Pacific Beach

4. Travel time from California- load your car up with all your favorite beach toys, bicycles, clothes and coolers and from Phoenix or Tuscon you can be sitting on the beach in less than 4 hours ( that includes unpacking the car and putting your chair in the sand)

5. Beaches are free in Mexico- no $10 car charge, no blocking off of the beach for walking the beach due to a resort hotel, no tags. Open to all. Best thing all the new developments are right on the beach and you can just walk back and forth to your condo or room. Economically hard to beat!

6. Rules and Regulations- Where did all the rules come from? Example of a sign in San Diego on the beach

NO fires on beach

NO shell picking
In Mexico go to Sandy Beach, take your cooler, your dog, your food, drinks relax and take a nap all for free. Where did all the rules come from?. It must be that inner voice inside my head but I hate to be told what to do when I'm on vacation. Beach combing of washed up shells is an age old pastime. Also, just like the Corona commercials which you know are not shot in California, you too can have a cervaza on the beach in Mexico, staring at blue water.

7. Crowds, packed bars, restaurants- on a Saturday in Pacific beach we went to three different bars to find a place to sit and have a cold beverage. I like crowds as much as the next guy at the right event but sometimes you want to be able to sit down have a drink and enjoy the view without waiting. Walking down Sandy beach with miles of empty beautiful beaches is hard to pass up.
Yes, I love the California surf just as much as the next guy but spending two crowded weekends there sure gave me the Mexico withdrawals. Sorry California friends! Anita Kaltenbaugh

Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs Outlawed in L.A.

We spent the 4th of July holiday in Mexico this year, I was just a bit apprehensive spending 4th of July in another country. I also heard many of the fireworks in Phoenix would be canceled, due to the economy this year.

We decided to go to Rocky Point, and what a pleasant surprise and wonderful holiday it turned out to be!

We spent the 4th of July at the Sonoran Resorts on Sandy Beach, Pool Party! Live Band! So there we were, beach side, live band, ocean in the back round, drinks in hand while in the pool. The kids got to ride on the Banana Boat all day long, in the eve, we had a Movie by the Pool, Salsa Dancing Lessons, Treasure hunt for the Children, fire works, Mexican dancers, and all sorts of fun things to do! A good time was had by all! See photos on Face Book! and we also had Mexican hot dogs, which is the point of this whole story!

The hot dog looked different then what we are used to, and as far as hotdogs go, it was by far one of the best I have ever had!

by El Gitano a while back, asking for opinions about the best eateries in Rocky Point, Eduardo opined that the best thing in town is "Sonoran style hot dogs" and recommended a spot to find them. As it turns out, those hot dogs are wrapped in bacon and grilled, their history apparently going back to some entrepreneur selling hot dogs from an unidentified hot dog cart in Mexico City's Parque de la Alameda.

The regional differences lie in the trimmings that are put on them. In Sonora, those trimmings are sauteed onions, finely chopped tomatoes, 5 to 7 beans (its about the dog!!), some mayonaise and some mustard.

What Eduardo said was this: "As a sonora style hot dog lover I must say, and I am opening this secret to all gringos, the old man in the corner of Constitucion Ave and Benito Juarez has the best "sonora style hot dogs" in town, must go early 'cause he only makes around 250 once they are sold he's gone for the day, luckly he is teaching his sons about the secrets of dog cooking and it seems they like it too!!!

"The glory of Sonoran style, bacon wrapped hot dogs is just one more reason to visit-- or move to-- Puerto Penasco, especially if you live in Los Angeles, CA. Because, you see, L.A. has decided they are a hazard to your health, and has made them illegal.

The story, as reported by the L.A. Times (The Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dog: So Good It's Illegal), is really a little more complicated than that, but only marginally when you really look at it. Who the County Health Department and various law enforcement agencies are really targeting appears to be only street vendors in the heavily Hispanic southeastern section of downtown L.A.'s commercial district, making no distinction between the legal, licensed, regulated, tax paying vendors and the illegal vendors. Quite understandably, those vendors are upset about it and feel that racism is in play there.

The story in the Times centers on a legal vendor, who has been hawking her wares from her cart for more than a dozen years. When she ignored warnings to stop selling the bacon wrapped dogs she was arrested and jailed for 45 days. Needless to say, she no longer sells them and her business has plummeted as a result.

It's a very interesting story and I recommend that you read it. But in the meantime, if you really need a fix of bacon wrapped hot dogs, you can get them any time you want-- in Puerto Penasco / Rocky Point Mexico!
